As Yom Kippur begins in two days….. let’s look at some questions that Isaiah put forth.
Isaiah 57:5-6 Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? (Isaiah 57:5-6)
Those of us who have been doing the Moedim for any period of time certainly associate Yom Kippur with fasting from food for the day. But, God’s instruction about fasting here is not really about fasting from food at all. Instead, it is that ritual doesn’t do anything unless it is accompanied by godly living.
Let’s compare that passage to what Yeshua said on Yom Kippur…and another year of Jubilee… when His ministry began.
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those that are broken, 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
Sounds like Yeshua is in total agreement with Isaiah…..actually it is the other way around.
Yom Kippur looks like a day of FREEDOM and CELEBRATION! Even the Jewish art seems to indicate this! Let us remember that from the Passover in Egypt to the Passover of Yeshua, God’s intention was to set the captives free…..whether from oppressive governments or sin that holds people in bondage.
The message of the Bible is Freedom. He starts with a man, gives him a family, promises him a land for his posterity; and then follows it up with this blessing: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Genesis 22:16-18

Psalm 116:16 O Lord, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.18 I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.19 In the courts of the Lord's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord.
