Joseph claims the rest of the chapters of Genesis, except for Chapter 38...this week's study. This is a perfect example of how Hebrew thought can weave back and forth in the narrative....to give us a fuller picture of what is going on. We have already become acquainted with Reuben, Simeon, and Levi.
Last week, we learned of the character of the older brothers in this family. And we learned that Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons, giving him a special garment. We learned what that meant! So, when Joseph told his family of his two dreams, they hated him all the more. These dreams involved sheaves, from the earth, bowing to him; as well as the sun, moon, and stars bowing to him. These dreams are for the prophetic purpose of the sons of Israel to deliver the Messiah to the world.
This week we meet Judah...and a big chunk of his life that seems out of place here... especially with three grown sons! What we will see is the basis for the two houses of Israel. Joseph becomes the leader, but Judah is the line who will give birth to the Messiah. It is important to keep track of these two brothers. Where they go and what they do throughout their lives and the lives of their descendants becomes a very important part of the story of the whole House of Israel. (hint.... it is not all Jewish) Judah didn't have a Visa card or Apple Pay, but he was able to "charge" his transaction with his staff, his signet ring, and his chord. We'll talk about it.
