We will be sideline eyewitnesses as the Smackdown of all history begins, for our Torah portion this week. What are we to learn as we observe this? The 'World Empire', represented by Egypt at this time, is about to find out that the God of Israel is the only God there is. All the things or animals or creatures, that the Egyptians have been paying homage to, have fooled the people into thinking these are gods. They were not!
What we are about to see is the God of Israel making all their 'gods' look silly. What they have been worshiping as a pantheon of gods, the God of Israel will expose as false and fake. We'll start at the river, move to the palace, and then move onto the land. Three signs come upon Egypt, and Pharaoh's heart becomes hardened and cannot let the Hebrews go; his pride just won't let him. There are seven more signs to come.
The question is.... how is our culture and society similar to the Egyptians of 3500 years ago? Are we, as a culture, confused as to whom the LORD is? All throughout history, God has tried to present the Truth of who He is to mankind; and man's heart has been hard toward God. No wonder God puts emphasis on His people having a circumcised heart. Let's see where this journey through the plagues take us and what they have to teach us!
